Love and death in metaphysical poetry

The course will address those elements of Metaphysical poetry that make it so topical and so striking: a love of high diction, an interest in emotions seen as an education of the soul, a passion for the unexpected turn of phrase, and, above all, an obsession with the boundless possibilities of the intellect.

After the first introductory lesson, students will be required to engage with a number of poems in terms of style and language and will be asked to produce an analysis of the texts studied as well as short presentations to the class.
